How to read military time

Hours first, minutes second, no colon

Military time counts the day from 0000 to 2359. There is no AM or PM and no colon: the first two digits are the hour, the last two are the minutes, so 1730 is 5:30 PM. Hours before 10 keep a leading zero — 0800 is 8:00 AM.

How it is spoken

Whole hours are read as "hundred": 1700 is "seventeen hundred", not "seventeen hundred hours o'clock". With minutes you say the digits: 1742 is "seventeen forty-two", 0805 is "zero eight oh five". Noon is 1200, midnight is 0000 (or 2400 when it means the end of the day).

Military time vs 24-hour time

It is the same clock. Most of the world uses 24-hour time every day and writes it with a colon — 17:42 — while US military notation drops the colon and always uses four digits — 1742. The spoken form is the other difference: a 24-hour clock is read "seventeen forty-two", military time adds "hundred" for whole hours. Military and aviation messages often add a letter for the zone, where Z ("Zulu") is UTC: 1742Z is 17:42 UTC.
