What is UTC?

UTC, Coordinated Universal Time, is the time standard the whole world sets its clocks by. Every time zone is written as an offset from it: New York is UTC−5 in winter, India is UTC+5:30 and Tokyo is UTC+9. UTC is kept by atomic clocks, never changes for daylight saving and is the same everywhere at the same moment, which is why aviation, shipping, the internet and computer systems use it to record and schedule events. Occasional leap seconds keep it within a second of the Earth's rotation; none has been added since 2016, and they are due to be phased out by 2035.

UTC vs GMT

For everyday use, UTC and GMT show the same time. GMT, Greenwich Mean Time, is the older standard based on the sun at Greenwich in London; UTC replaced it as the world's reference in 1972 and is based on atomic clocks, so the two can differ by less than a second. Today GMT is mainly the name of a time zone: the UK, Ireland, Iceland and much of West Africa use it, and the UK and Ireland leave it in summer for BST and IST. UTC never changes. Zulu time

Zulu time is UTC. Military and aviation use the letter Z for the zero-offset zone — "Zulu" in the NATO phonetic alphabet — so 1742Z, said "seventeen forty-two Zulu", means 17:42 UTC. Pilots file flight plans and weather reports in Zulu time so everyone works from the same clock, wherever they are. The same Z ends computer timestamps such as 2026-10-11T17:42:09Z. Military time →

UTC time questions

What time is it in UTC now?

The clock at the top of this page shows the current UTC time, to the second. UTC is the same everywhere at the same moment and never changes for daylight saving.

Is UTC the same as GMT?

For everyday use, yes — they show the same time to within a second. GMT is also the name of a time zone that the UK and Ireland leave in summer; UTC never changes.

What is Zulu time?

Zulu time is UTC. The letter Z ("Zulu") marks the zero-offset zone in military, aviation and computer timestamps: 1742Z is 17:42 UTC.

How do I convert UTC to my time?

Add your zone's offset: UTC+5:30 means add 5 hours 30 minutes, UTC−5 means subtract 5 hours. This page shows your own offset under the clock, and the table above shows UTC in the main time zones.

Does UTC change for daylight saving?

No. UTC stays the same all year. Places with daylight saving change their offset from UTC instead: New York moves from UTC−5 to UTC−4 in summer.

Why is UTC used for flights, servers and logs?

Because it is one clock for the whole world with no daylight-saving jumps. Times written in UTC can be compared and sorted without knowing where they were recorded.
